Chronicles of an Online Poker Player - Part One
Author: J. Scott Miller

“Where does all of the money go”

This week I decided by in for $20 and go into a 10 cent/20 cent “no-limit” game on Intertops. There are many online poker rooms, but Intertops has always been my online choice to lose my money….er, I mean, entertain myself.

Since playing poker is always a learning experience, and by that, I mean when you learn, you usually lose. However this week I did manage to learn a trick about The Table Bully. He (or she) is the one who constantly raises pre-flop (before any cards are turned over). This person raises practically every hand, and every time 90% of the players fold.

This monkey raised pre-flop again, and I had had enough! So I re-raised 4 times his raise, with only 7-10 off-suit. There is usually a timer (or clock) on these games (to speed up play) and sure enough he waited and waited, until time had expired and he folded. Now bear in mind, if he had re-raised me 4 times my raise, I would have been the one folding, but for me it worked out this time. The win was minimal, but the point was made.

You do have to be careful with the bully, mainly because you need to watch his play for a while, before re-raising him. Mind you, this is just a ploy to stop his antics. If he has $79 in front of him, and $20 being the maximum you can buy in for, this typically means he’s been either very lucky, or lucky and good. I don’t believe in too much skill when someone has AA and goes all-in and wins the pot. We do know that just because you have AA, does NOT mean you will automatically win the hand. I have proven that many times, and that I will speak about another time.

So good luck playing in your next game, and hopefully you can time your re-raise correctly and win the hand. We all saw it on national TV when Chris Moneymaker went all-in with absolutely nothing and won. I have nothing all of the time, and look at me now! Make the world a better place, and punch that bully in the face.

I’ll see you next time when I speak about “How to lose with AA.”
